Everyone has heard about Forskolin as it is the biggest thing in weight loss right now. However, Forskolin is not new to alternative medicine. The plant that contains it (Coleus forskohlii) comes from the lavender and mint family and has been used for ages for different types of disorders, and you can freely buy it online nowadays.
What is the proper Forskolin dosage?
The researchers of the University of Kansas performed a double-blind placebo-controlled study in 2005 on thirty overweight or obese men. Compared to the placebo group, the group who took Forskolin reported significant changes in body composition and decreases in body fat percentage. They took 250 mg of 10% Forskolin twice a day for a period of 12 weeks.
A similar study was conducted in 2005 by seventeen scientists of Baylor University in Waco, Texas, just that this time it was focused on mildly overweight women. The conclusion was published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition, in a material called “Effects of Coleus Forskohlii Supplementation on Body Composition and Hematological Profiles in Mildly Overweight Women”. It stated that forskolin “has the potential to positively influence the loss and management of overall body weight“. However, just like the previous study, it recommended further research in order for its potential for that dose to be fully understood.
If you are tempted to take a lot of Forskolin hoping that you will see massive results, there is evidence to prove that. Following the general logic of nutrition you can assume it won’t lead to a magical overnight transformation. An open-label clinical trial using a high dosage was conducted in 2013 by Seika Kamohara and Somboon Noparatanawong, two scientists from the Health Science, DHC Corporation, University of Tokyo, Japan.
After the trial ended, the scientists reached the conclusion that forskolin does have the potential to be an adjunct therapy in treating overweight and obese persons with absolutely no health-related issues. Their conclusion was based on administering a dose of 500 mg of 10% forskolin twice a day with meals to 15 completely healthy volunteers for 8 weeks. However, these high dosage requires further side effect studies using double-blind trials. So it is not recommended to take that much, even if you are very healthy, at least not yet, until new studies will be performed.
The clearest and most certain advice comes from weight loss expert Lisa Lynn, an authority in the field who helped countless people shed the extra pounds. In Dr. Oz’s show, she suggested a dosage of 125 mg at breakfast with a meal as being “a smart fashion to take Forskolin”. However, she continued by explaining that when you start taking Forskolin is better to start with a small dose, as you can always modify it later and add more.
She emphasizes the fact that you should proceed this way and take only “exactly as you need as more is never better”. According to Lisa Lynn, anyone interested in losing weight should start with the standard dose of 125 mg. After a while, you can increase it. Lisa Lynn and Dr. Oz also discussed about the fact that Forskolin doesn’t necessarily have to be the only ally against weight loss. It can be a part of a more extensive program that you are currently on. As a metabolism booster, it will have a significant role.
Also, Doctor Oz says that the “secret to get the right dosage is to look on the label.” He recommended the same dosage of 125 mg in the morning that usually the manufacturers stand by as well. He explains that this dosage with at least 10% Forskolin to effectively do its job such as burning the fat from the inside. If you can find supplement with 20% Forskolin even better.
As for the Forskolin content in supplements, Clayton South, renowned specialist in fitness and bodybuilding, deals with this matter comprehensively in the Botanical Research Bulletin, Vol. 1, No. 6. He emphasizes the fact that a person should use “standardized extracts which have concentrated the Forskolin content”. He recommends this because the content of crude products made of the plant Coleus Forskohlii aren’t usually enough to trigger a pharmacological effect. There isn’t enough Forskolin to offer the effects that people are looking for. He backs up Lisa Lynn’s advice by saying that a standardized extract that contains enough Forskolin is 50 mg and that should be taken two or three times a day.
These authorities in weight loss, bodybuilding and fitness confirm what the manufacturers of Forskolin supplements advise about Forskolin dosage.
The proper Forskolin dosage is usually completed by a single supplement. There is no need to look for Coleus Forskohlii and try use the plant raw. It is not available on the market and, even if it were, it wouldn’t be as useful.
To recap, start with a lower dose of around 125 mg a day. After some time increase it to 250mg per day. Take Forskolin for around 12 weeks to notice effect. While shopping for the best brand Forskolin extract select products with at least 10% Forskolin contents.
